About The EWA 2009 Annual Conference
November 3, 2009
The European Water Association is organizing every year in Brussels a conference on a topic related to the Water Framework Directive and daughter directives. This brings together one hundred high level participants who are either contributors to the WFD Common Implementation Strategy, Brussels water stakeholders or EWA members working on national and regional matters. As such, EWA Brussels conference is a unique opportunity to take stock on the progress made with the implementation of EU water policy and the lessons learned on the field.
In 2009, the conference will focus on Directive 2007/60/EC of 23 October 2007 on the assessment and management of flood risks. At the time the river basin management plans – developed under the Water Framework Directive – are submitted to public consultation before entering into force by the end of 2009, preparatory works have started to elaborate the first floods risk management plans that will enter into force by the end of 2015. Starting from that time, the WFD and foods management schemes will be jointly implemented. In order to make those two instruments mutually supportive, full consistency on the objectives and measures must be ensured while specific floods management instruments issues must be further developed. In both cases, a high demand is also placed on sectoral integration (biodiversity protection, Climate Change adaptation, etc.).
